The opportunities for foreign direct investment in China were greatly increased following the introduction of the "open door policy" in the late 1970s. Richard Pomfret's study is the first to analyze the impact of direct foreign investment on China over the decade of the open door policy. Events in China at the end of the 1980s and the ever changing economic relations in the Pacific Rim region make this study particularly timely. In part the study is based on active field research in the country itself and it should be of interest to those studying development economics and international economics. It may also prove valuable for those directly concerned with investment opportunities in the region and with the new opportunities for investment in Eastern Europe.
