The introduction of deer forests was not popular with the majority of crofters. The author examines why this was so, and how forests served to marginalise and impoverish local people. He also discusses the ways in which forests may have brought money into the community, while still being a major factor in the economic under-development of the Highlands in the twentieth century.

After a public school education, he turned his back on the values of his parents, working for a time in the Belfast shipyards and also as an actor in theatres throughout Ireland. He then moved to Scotland and spent time in the Iona Community, before becoming a shepherd and later a teacher. He now lives in Oban with his wife Jan.
