A working group of the Institute of Medical Ethics met over three years to discuss medical research with children. This book, based on their report, examines the legal and ethical bases for carrying out research on children, using many published examples of such research to help readers think more clearly about the subject. It suggests what research is needed medically, and looks carefully at the risks involved. It reviews work on moral development to suggest when children can themselves give permission for research. It reports a survey of research ethics committees in England and Wales, and provides practical suggestions for keeping research on children ethical. The final chapter gives the working group's conclusions and recommendations for the future.
