The book, Visser's Annotated European Patent Convention, is a commentary on the European Patent Convention and a bestseller in European patent law. The 2021 edition of this preeminent work - the only regularly updated authoritative article-by-article commentary in English on the European Patent Convention (EPC), its implementing regulations, and associated case law provides the complete text of the law annotated with commentary and expert guidance on the interpretation of each paragraph.
Since its first edition in 1994 it has provided the European patent community with the necessary insights to practice successfully before the European Patent Office. The EPO recommends the Visser's Annotated European Patent Convention as the first book in its list of non-EPO/WIPO literature to be used for the preparation of the European qualifying examination.

Laurence Lai is a European and UK patent attorney and has worked in IP since 2013. He advises a range of clients, from university tech transfer offices to global Software-as-a-Service providers. He drafts and prosecutes patent applications in a diverse mix of technologies including smart utility meters, medical assay devices and payment transaction systems. Laurence also handles contentious matters in the form of oppositions at the European Patent Office. His clients particularly value his holistic approach to patent portfolio management.
Laurence also serves as one of the UK’s Chartered Institute of Patent Attorney’s liaisons to the UK Intellectual Property Office. In this role, he actively engages in discussions on policy and patent law changes. Earlier in his career, Laurence worked as a structural analysis engineer for a leading systems and engineering technology consultancy, tackling projects across aerospace and civil nuclear power sectors.
Derk Visser studied physics and worked at Philips Electronics as researcher and developer for about ten years. In 1990 he moved to the patent department of Philips Electronics, where he obtained the Dutch and European qualifications.
He published the first edition of his book The Annotated European Patent Convention in the spring of 1994. In 2005 he moved to the London firm EIP, where he became partner and since 2016 of counsel. His practice focuses on legal advice work. Derk is actively involved in training students for the eqe all over Europe.
In 2020 Derk Visser was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to European patent law at the Managing IP Awards in London.
Peter de Lange earned a BSc in chemistry and MSc in Nanomaterials (2011) and also obtained a degree in law (LLM cum laude in 2011, next to an LLB). Peter completed an internship with the European Patent Office (Boards of Appeal) during his studies. Peter joined V.O. Patents & Trademarks in 2011 and qualified as a Dutch patent attorney in 2014 and as a European patent attorney in 2015.
European Patent Attorney Kaisa Suominen joined a Finnish private practice firm after her graduation and has since mainly worked in private practice, including five years as managing director. She is currently working at Laine IP. She entered the register of Finnish Patent Agents in 1999 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2003. Kaisa's work covers various aspects related to inventions, ranging from advising clients on patenting strategies, drafting patent applications and prosecution at various patent offices to oppositions and court cases as well as drafting opinions. Having worked mainly in smaller agencies, Kaisa has practical experience in many fields of technology, such as chemistry and material science but also mechanics and electronics. Her educational background is in chemistry and materials engineering.
In addition to the attorney work, Kaisa is active in tutoring and training fellow patent attorneys as well as trainee patent attorneys around Europe (Ceipi, epi, etc). Kaisa is also a member of the examination committee for the Finnish patent attorney examination.
