Web tracking is ubiquitous and undertaken by governmental agencies as well as private actors alike. It is often hidden; for the average internet user, the origin and extent of online tracking is unclear. This thesis examines both current EU and U.S. laws and concludes that internet users' privacy rights are to date insufficiently protected and enforced. Consequently, it argues for a rigorous legislation to improve online privacy.
