This book is the result of a collaboration between a philosopher interested in ethics and a psychiatrist. The aims of the book are to attempt to show what is valuable about psychotherapy and to identify psychotherapy's contribution to the human sciences. The second half of the book focuses on the moral and clinical dilemmas that arise in the different forms of psychoterapy - analytic, behavioural and sytematic - and possible solutions to them. It discusses the need for a code of practice for psychotherapists, argues for an expansion of statefunded psychotherapy if the less well-off are to benefit and supports the case for an independent profession of psychotherapy.
