His work includes major docks (West India, Bristol Floating Harbour), canals (Ellesmere, Grand Junction, Rochdale, Caledonian, Grand Canal of Ireland), the Trent Navigation, land drainage and two early railways - the Surrey Iron and the Kilmarnock and Troon.
