Very long-term social and economic development is once again attracting the interest of historians and social scientists. In this volume, two sociologists and an economic historian explore and explain the evolution of major features of human society: the origin of priests and organized religion; the rise of military men in agrarian society; economic expansion and economic growth; and the fluctuation of "civilizing" and "de-civilizing" trends.
