Fire and Civilization

This book is a history of man's relationship with fire, from his earliest prehistoric taming of this most basic elemental force, through to the Industrial Revolution, nuclear fission and beyond. The book is primarily a social history of man's control - and failure to control - fire, and of his uses, agricultural, industrial, symbolic and artistic of it.
