Eduardo Galeano was born in Uruguay in 1940 and worked there as a journalist until he was arrested and was obliged to flee the country. He is one of Latin America's most respected writers and the author of Open Veins of Latin America. Originally published in Cuba, Days and Nights of Love and War won the Casa de las Americas prize in 1978. Galeano was awarded the Lannan Foundation's 1999 Cultural Prize for Freedom.
