The focus of this book is on the interaction between European Community (EC) and national policy-making, whilst underlining how national traditional political traditions limit progress towards it.
Part One introduces the framework for the study of EC institutions, policy-making and policy output. Possible lines of development of the EC are examined - from a system which will have strong supra-national institutions to a Europe composed of two or more divisions. The second part presents empirical studies of sector policies demonstrating varying degrees of Europeification. Transport, energy and the standardization of the telecommunications industry are examined - all prerequisites for the effective functioning of the internal market. Part Three discusses the future economic and political structure of the EC and relates EC developmentsto the broader development of the EC.
Rezensionen / Stimmen
`The comparative design of the book with regard to the sectoral studies as its core as well as the elaboration of the concept "Europeification" make this work a stimulating contribution to discussions about the specific nature of the EU's decision-making and implementation process' - Insight
`The first two parts are excellent. Part 1 sets the scene well, looking at policy-making and implementation structures. Part 2 contains seven sectoral studies... as examples of policies that are neither exclusively national or European, but exhibit a mix of national and European aspects. These two section beautifully illustrate the complexity of European policy-process, and the interactions between the national and supranational levels. For its grasp of the nature of the contemporary European political system, the book deserves to be recommended' - Political Studies
`What distinguishes this contribution from the growing collection of political studies of the European Union is the vision of the autors and the analytic framework it shapes. Too few studies of the EU seem sensitive to the complex nature of arenas within which political authority derives its legitimacy and political actors coordinate their responsibilities. The collection of essays offered by Andersen and Eliassen allows one to see more vividly the real significance of a European Union - the reinventing of political authority within Europe...This book grasps the fundamental point of which students must become keenly aware - political authority in Europpe is now closer than ever to a true Europeification of conflict resolution and consensus development. This insightful and informatively edited volume exposes the full texture of evolution of policy-making in European Union...[an] important contribution to the literature on comparative politics, this volume will fill a void unfortunately too often left open by its predecssors' - Choice
`This edited collection provides a welcome addition to the literature on European Community policy-making. While existing texts in this area have tended to examine the EC policy process from a national or a comparative perspective, this book focuses particularly on the policy process at the supra-national level. The book examines the workings of the national system at the European level and assess the impact of this system on national policy-making in a number of policy sectors... For those interested in the EC policy process and in the broader implications of the process, both for national policy-making and for the European political system, this book should certainly be recommended' - Journal of European Social Policy
