Public Service Broadcasting

This book examines the basis for public service broadcasting and its function in the contemporary competitive media environment. The author presents as case studies the development of broadcasting in Britain, Japan and Germany, whilst referring to wider international practice, and shows how the current practice of public service broadcasting is conditioned by its past development. He examines the extent to which public service broadcasting can be reconciled with new attitudes to the relation of the state and the economy, and with developments in new technologies for the delivery of broadcast services. This assessment aims to contribute to the current debate between supporters and critics of public service broadcasting.
