Description
This is a practical guide, rooted in best practice, to designing a wide and engaging primary curriculum. Schools are struggling to balance the statutory requirements of a National Curriculum with their desire to provide the wide, engaging and exciting curriculum that they know children need. Concerns about standards often lead to a narrowing of the curriculum and many schools lack the confidence and approach to design that would enable them to resolve what seems like an impossible dilemma. In this authoritative yet engaging book, Brian Male looks at how schools can meet the requirements of a National Curriculum and yet be flexible enough to meet the needs, interests and concerns of pupils, to be rooted in their lives and localities and to give scope for teachers to use their own creativity. "The Curriculum Design Handbook - Primary Edition" is a practical guide on how to design a curriculum that will engage children's interest, excite their imaginations and at the same time provide them with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to live successfully in the 21st Century.
Reviews / Votes
I have always regarded Brian as the guru of curriculum design - his ability to translate complex issues into the practical is amazing. He has dedicated his life to ensuring that our children are rewarded with the curriculum they deserve; rich, dynamic, contextual and relevant. This guide is a culmination of his work, his thinking, his genius. Please read it, use it and help to make the greatest difference to curriculum and ultimately, our children! * Richard Gerver, international speaker and author of Creating Tomorrow's Schools Today * 'Brian Male has written a book that could just make life a great deal better for every child whose teacher makes the time to read it. It won't take long to read and reading it is a joy! Brian has managed to bring together all his wisdom from many years of successful experience helping teachers make learning irresistible for kids, all his knowledge of the most effective education systems in the world, all his practicality in making great curriculum design simple and all his wit in lampooning the nonsense and the waffle and ideological mumbo jumbo around what irresistible learning looks and feels like. Just imagine if every child in every class had the chance to experience and thrive within the dynamic curriculum this book explains, curriculum design for learning experiences that put learners at the heart, that excites their imaginations, extends their horizons, meets their intellectual and personal needs and prepares them to be active citizens in a global society. With this book they might just. Thank you, Brian. This is simply the best and most helpful book on the art of teaching that I have read for a very, very long time. Buy it, read it, share it with every teacher you know.' Peter Hall Jones, CEO, The Curriculum Foundation, UK 'This book is invaluable for anyone leading curriculum change in schools. It is inspiring and refreshing to have a book about the curriculum that first and foremost recognises all schools are different. This book does not give you an off-the-shelf curriculum but guiding principles to lead you into revisiting and redefining your goals for the curriculum to prepare your learners for the rapidly changing society we live in. Furthermore, it is a powerful tool in supporting schools to confidently articulate their understanding of how their curriculum is personalised to meet the needs of their learners within a national and global context.'
