Martha's Vineyard Table

When you step off the ferry at Oak Bluffs, you know right away you are in a special place. Quaint, crooked streets are lined with restaurants along the harbor and many charming inns with gray weathered shingles are within walking distance, along with historic "gingerbread" cottages. Martha's Vineyard has long been known as a popular vacationer's paradise, but fewer know that the island has a rich culinary history, brought by settlers from around the world including the original Wampanoag Indians; the Portuguese, from Portugal and the Cape Verde Islands; African Americans from all over; Jamaicans, Brazilians, and good solid Yankees. And with them they brought their favourite recipes, which author and longtime Vineyard resident, Jessica Harris has presented here with such delightful treats as Codfish Fritters, Stuffed Quahogs, her mother's summer fried chicken, Mitzi's Bay Scallops with Deep-Fried Kale, Corn Pudding, and Cranberry-Apple Crisp.
