Description
This field manual, for both managers and technical staff, addresses health and nutrition issues in emergencies, with a particular emphasis on emergencies involving refugees and internally-displaced populations. Three main areas are covered by the book: "Theory", which explores the effects of displacement on health, looks at approaches to effective intervention and analyzes the host country's health systems; "Guidelines" which cover practical implementation, including approaches to information gathering as well as specific interventions and action; and "Techniques", which presents a series of annexes which describe specific technologies and techniques that include standard diagnostic and treatment guidelines, control of specific diseases, assessment methodologies and training. The handbook is intended to be suitable for the relatively inexperienced as well as those who have previously worked in emergencies. Further reference material is provided.
