Description
One of the twentieth century's foremost public intellectuals, Arendt was intensely private. Though she acknowledged that the language of poetry-especially that of Dickinson, Goethe and Lowell-informed her work, few knew that Arendt herself wrote poems. In fact, between 1923 and 1961, Arendt wrote seventy-four poems, many of them deeply autobiographical. For nearly forty years after her death, these poems remained hidden, until 2011, when they were rediscovered by Samantha Rose Hill. Now, for the first time in English, Hill and Genese Grill present Arendt's poems. Throughout, Arendt uses poetry to mark moments of joy, love, loss and reflection, and tries to understand her place in the world.
A gift to all readers of Arendt, this stunning, dual-language edition provides an unparalleled insight to one of our most original thinkers.

Reviews / Votes
"What Remains shows a very different side to [Arendt]. In poems of startling simplicity she reflects on courage and hope in the face of chaos." -- Bel Mooney - Daily Mail "A new volume of [Arendt's] poetry reveals that the author of sobering works like The Origins of Totalitarianism and The Human Condition was writing ardent and intimate verse in her off-hours." -- Srikanth Reddy - The Paris Review "The strongest contribution of What Remains is its bright illumination of Arendt's overall body of work-her intellectual dissection of authoritarian rule, her sorrow in the face of the fracturing of the society she knew, and her deep love for the world." -- Hannah Joyner - Open Letters "[What Remains]... has given us that rare thing-a testament to what poetic thinking might be, available to all readers, and keenly attuned to our political moment. This book reminds us of what poetic thinking is and why we need it now." -- Katie Peterson - Los Angeles Review of Books "These delightful poems provide a window into Arendt's vibrant engagements with the world... This volume is a treasure for fans of Arendt and poetry." -- Julie R. Enszer - Jewish Book CouncilMore details
