Luther

Martin Luther, the "pugnacious theo-logy professor", couldn´t have begun to imagine the farreaching consequences of his actions as he nailed his theses opposing the Church´s dealing in indulgences onto the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church in 1517. His uncompromising stance toward the Roman Curia and his undeterred actions, which were marked by deep inner piety, were to have noticeable consequences far beyond the borders of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. But Martin Luther was not only the mind behind the religious Reformation movement. After he had been "abducted" for his own safety and taken to the Wartburg Castle, he labored for almost an entire year to translate the Bible into German. With that he made a significant contribution toward the development of a German national language. The fascination this powerful man still holds for us today continues year after year to draw people to the various stations in the life of the great German Reformer.
