Description
This enlightening book makes visible the lives and works of women who played a critical role in the development of geography as an academic field. A rare and detailed analysis of the geographical work of 30 individual women geographers from 1850 to 1970 Includes oral histories from women who have held appointments in British universities since World War II Makes the work of women geographers visible and challenges the notion of pre 1970s geography as an overwhelmingly masculine field Makes an important contribution to debates about the theoretical and methodological framing of the historiography of geography
Reviews / Votes
"I see Complex Locations as a starting point, a bridge to further research, whether on women's geographical work or other approaches to a more inclusive historiography of geographical thought and practice." (Avril Maddrell, University of the West of England, 1 November 2010) "If this book has brought about acts of individual scholarly recovery and a greater collective effort of historiographical re-balancing within and for geography in Britain, it has also served to identify other issues." (Charles W J Withers, University of Edinburgh, 1 November 2010) "In such ways, Complex Locations also takes its place amongst those feminist geographies that sharpen debates about how we practice geography and begin, perhaps, to make a positive difference." (James Sidaway, University of Amsterdam, 1 November 2010) "This is a thoroughly engaging text. It should be repeatedly read, and its paperback format should ensure affordability for libraries, be they university, college or local public. It comolements an increasing body of work in human geography research." (Jo Norcup, University of Glasgow, 1 November 2010) "Complex locations should be included on all undergraduate courses about the history of the discipline, and should be read widely by other researchers interested in women and the history of geography, science and education." (Alison Blunt - Queen Mary, University of London, 1 November 2010) "Complex Locations is set to become a classic, both amongst those continuing to work on studies of the discipline and its variegated pasts, and those working in the broader field of hitorical geography." (Kevin Ward - University of Manchester, 1 November 2010)More details
