Description
"SimNerv" is an interactive computer program for simulating the frog sciatic nerve experiment required of students in physiology courses. It is suitable for all students of medicine, biology and veterinary medicine who have to perform the sciatic nerve experiement in the course of their studies. The software is structured as follows: "Wetlands" - a light-hearted introduction by means of six frog images and calls; "Video dissection program" - digital video tapes demonstrate the dissection of the sciatic nerve from decapitation to nerve excision, consisting of six parts - decapitation, dissection of legs and pelvis, skinning, dissection of lumbosacral plexus, removal of coccygeal fat, and isolation and excision of nerve; and "Virtual physiology lab" - this is the core of the program - users can perform all standard experiments on the summation action potential of the peripheral nerves in realistic laboratory surroundings. This CD-ROM version includes "Wetlands", the video sequence of frog dissection, and the "Virtual physiology lab", for both Macintosh and IBM PCs, containing all: handbook and lab course licence.
CD-ROM versions for Macintosh (full and tryout) - PC requirements are: Macintosh 68040 recommended (also runs on 68030 or Power PC microprocessors), at least 8 MB free main memory, 40 MB free hard disk capacity, CD-ROM drive and RGB monitor (640 x 480 pixels). CD-ROM version for Windows (full and tryout) - IBM-compatible PC hardware requirements are: minimum 386 (486 recommended), 8 MB RAM (10 MB recommended), 40 MB free hard disk capacity, colour monitor, with 256-bit colours (thousands of colours recommended) and MCI-compatible sound card (soundblaster recommended). The program was developed under the name "MacFrog" at the University of Marburg, Germany, and has won three awards: MacWelt Award 1993 for trendsetting software in the multimedia area; Austro-German University Software Award 1993 for the best multimedia instructive software; and Austro-German University Software Award 1993 for the best instructive software in the disciplines of medicine and biology.
