Description
The Smart Systems Integration 2016 is the International Conference and Exhibition on
integration of materials, devices and systems. It started 2007 as European Conference and Exhibition and has now become a leading event at international level. It serves as a
communication platform for academia, research and industry to exchange know-how on
smart systems integration.
Smart systems are self-sufficient intelligent technical systems or subsystems with advanced functionality. They are able to sense, diagnose, describe, qualify and manage a given situation, their operation being further enhanced by their ability to mutually address, identify and work in consort with each other. They are highly reliable, often miniaturized, networked, predictive and energy autonomous. They are the hardware basis for the internet of things (IoT).
Main component of the smart systems are the sensing elements. Analysts are investigating the demand for the internet of things. According to Yole Développement two main tendencies will be observed: The currently existing, mostly silicon-based IoT sensors will be further developed to get better integrated, lower price and less power consuming devices. Together with electronics, established communication protocols this generation will reach high volumes. By integrating all the different sensor building blocks onto a small chip (sensing, processing, RF, energy harvesting, .) so-called sensor swarms will arise. These sensor swarms are based on inorganic sensing.
On the other hand, there is a development of disposable low-cost devices ongoing. This includes polytronics systems and in the next step printed systems. Such systems will be produced by roll-to-roll printing at extremely large volumes and extremely low cost.
Within the keynote sessions these two main trends will be addressed. The first one is the hardware side of the Internet of Things. The second one is printed, large area, flexible and stretchable electronics.
The 10th Smart Systems Integration Conference SSI 2016 addresses applications as well as aspects of basic research, and will show a snapshot of the international work in the field of smart systems integration. Moreover, a special sessions will be held, which addresses perspectives of smart systems. The pre-field trip to Fraunhofer EMFT completes the program.
