Description
Mult-e-Maths is a suite of electronic primary mathematics materials developed for use with interactive whiteboards and other classroom computer facilities. It is being developed strategically to take advantage of the growth market in interactive whiteboards, and to meet the needs of teachers for products that help them make the most effective use of this powerful medium. Components of Mult-e-Maths 2004-5 Primary Maths Toolbox: A set of whiteboard tools that can be used both independently or alongside the other components of 'Mult-e-Maths'. Tools include number lines, hundred grids, clocks, calculator, protractor, graphs, place value charts and fraction makers. The Toolbox will also contain a variety of backgrounds and objects (e.g. grids, dominoes, coins) that can be used to illustrate teaching points. The set-up of each tool can be altered and saved by the teacher, into a series of electronic pages. These can also include any text or backgrounds/objects the teacher wishes to add. In this way teachers will be able to design their own whiteboard lesson, and save and amend for later use. The Toolbox will also include a planning suite, where termly, weekly and lesson plans for mathematics can be adapted, printed and saved. A short series of notes, written by Lynda Maple, will give advice to teachers about using the Toolbox to plan effective lessons. Primary Interactive Maths Dictionary: This will be a fully interactive dictionary, with definitions presented in child-friendly terms. Each definition will be accompanied by an interactive activity or animation. The dictionary will cover the vocabulary listed in the Framework for Teaching Mathematics, and will also provide some words from the KS3 Framework, useful for extension. The dictionary can be used via the whiteboard when discussing mathematical vocabulary with a class or group. It can also be used on a PC, by individuals wishing to investigate definitions of words. We are proposing to purchase the rights to an existing Australian online primary maths dictionary, www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com, and develop and adapt this to the English curriculum. This dictionary has already been favourably publicised and reviewed in the UK media, and purchasing it would remove what is effectively free competition to our product. Interactive Teaching Activities, organised in strands for each Key Stage: KS2 Strands: 1. Numbers and the Number System; 2. Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ration and Proportion; 3. Addition and Subtraction; 4. Multiplication and Division; 5. Measures, Shape, Space and Handling Data; 6. Solving Problems. KS1 Strands 1. Numbers and the Number System; 2. Calculations; 3. Measures, Shape, Space and Handling Data; 4. Solving Problems. Each strand will comprise interactive whiteboard activities for the lesson starter, main teaching and plenary, backed up by printable teacher notes and differentiated activity sheets. One unique advantage of the electronic whiteboard is that more than one model of thought can be presented simultaneously. For example, children can perform a working out using the grid method of multiplication, which links directly into a column method. They can then see the broken-down grid version working and understand more clearly how the traditional column method is just a short-hand way of doing this. They can also demonstrate, for example, how the relative volumes of water change as water is poured from one container to another. Each whiteboard activity is to be written with this unique advantage in mind, to ensure that the product does make most effective use of the whiteboard. Lessons will also make reference to the Toolbox, suggesting ways in which teachers can use this resource to enhance learning and understanding.
