The pandemic teaching of mid-2020 was really not distance learning. It was also not homeschooling, which is a choice parents make for very specific reasons. It was crisis teaching. Now, we have time to be more purposeful and intentional with distance learning. What should not be lost is that as a field we learned more about what works by, at times, experiencing what didn't work in a virtual setting. It heightened our sense of what we already knew in face-to-face classrooms (Hattie, 2020):
Fostering student self-regulation is crucial for moving learning to deep and transfer levels
Learning accelerates when the student, not the teacher, is in control of learning
There needs to be a diversity of instructional approaches (not just some direct instruction and then some off-line independent work)
Well-designed peer learning impacts understanding
Feedback in a high trust environment must be integrated into the learning cycle
Let's use what we have learned and are continuing to learn, whether in a face-to-face or distance learning environment. As a part of face-to-face teaching, let's build our students' capacity (and our own) for distance learning. Now we have time to use evidence about what works best to impact students. Inspired by The Distance Learning Playbook, this On-Your-Feet Guide for Instructional Leaders will apply the wisdom of Visible Learning research to distance learning for principals, superintendents, and district leaders in a quick, easy-to-navigate guide.

Douglas Fisher is a professor and chair of educational leadership at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High and Middle College. Previously, Fisher was an early intervention teacher and elementary school educator. In 2022, he was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame by the Literacy Research Association. Nicole Law, PhD, is a Senior Consultant and Best-Selling Author for Corwin Publishing. She presents in the areas of leadership, professional learning communities, culturally responsive pedagogy, educating multilingual learners, and multidimensional aspects for Visible Learning. In addition, she has served as a curriculum coordinator for English language learners, cultural responsivity, AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination), district equity, and mathematics and science instruction in the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township in Indianapolis, Indiana. In this position, Nicole created multilayered and multifaceted professional learning for teachers and administrators covering all aspects of directed programs and curricular areas.
In 2008, Nicole received the National Milken Award from the state of Indiana. Prior to her leadership role, Nicole was a science teacher, administrator, and a building principal. She has an MEd in elementary administration and supervision from Butler University and a PhD from Indiana State University.
Nicole is the coauthor of multiple best-selling publications including: Mindframes for Belonging, Identities and Equity: Fortifying Cultural Bridges, Collective Equity: A Movement for Creating Communities Where We Can All Breathe and Comprehension: The Skill, Will, and Thrill of Reading. He currently serves as Principal at Health Sciences High and Middle College in San Diego, California. Dominique earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University and a Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California. A passionate advocate for belonging, restorative practices, and leadership development, Dr. Smith has co-authored several influential books, including Belonging in School: Creating a Place Where Kids Want to Learn and Teachers Want to Stay; Better Than Carrots or Sticks: Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management; Building Equity: Policies and Practices to Empower All Learners; Leader Credibility; How Leadership Works: A Playbook for Instructional Leaders; and The Restorative Practices Playbook.
