Beginning with a systematic review of the standard exposition of string theory, which is required for a proper understanding of matrix models of string theory, this book proceeds to provide a comprehensive presentation of matrix models of string theory and their areas of applications.
The core of the work commences with an introduction to advanced string theory (T-duality and D-branes in particular) and proceeds to describe the BFSS matrix quantum mechanics, aka M-(atrix) theory and the DVV matrix gauge theory, or matrix string theory, and their physics; the main applications of which are the black-hole/black-string (confinement-deconfinement) phase transition, the black hole information loss paradox and checks of the gauge/gravity duality. The IKKT matrix model concludes this part, including applications in emergent cosmology from the Lorentzian IKKT matrix model and noncommutative/matrix emergent gravity.
Supplemented with exercises and an appendix on Monte Carlo algorithms and methods used for matrix models of string theory, this work provides both a valuable self-study guide for postgraduate students and a comprehensive review and reference guide for researchers.
