Set in the near future the world as we know it has turned toxic. Global warming has left the majority of the planet uninhabitable. Skyscraper cities form the last strongholds against the fast-growing deserts that have taken over the globe. The survival of humankind is challenged by diseases, water shortages and food scarcity. In one of the massive battery farms that grow food for the living, Rosa has spent more than a decade in forced labor. Confronted with the reality of her body's purpose in this manmade pen, she holds on to the only thing that she has left: her hope of being reunited with her family one day.
The Last of Rosa is a dark and grim climate fiction short story that shows the limits of overharvesting a dying planet and that raises questions about humanity's behaviour towards how we treat the food sources we raise to kill.
More details
Person
Denise writes contemporary romance and crime novels and just added dystopian climate fiction short stories to her repertoire, foreshadowing dark climate scenarios that might soon become our new reality. Her stories always include strong female characters.
She has lived in Asia, Europe and the US and when she doesn't write or read, you'll find her with a camera in her hand or hiking boots on her feet, exploring the country she currently calls home. At the moment, she is living in New York City with her Irish husband and Confucius, her not-so-wise rescue cat from China.
