Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. IN preparing a course of lectures on 'river and Canal Engineering,' which I was requested to deliver at the School of Military Engineering at Chatham in 1880, it appeared to me that a book might be useful which should present, in a simple and concise form, descriptions of the principal and most recent works on rivers and canals, at home and abroad, and the principles on which they are based.
