Barry trained as a teacher at St. Luke's College Exeter for secondary (High School) in Chemistry, Biology and Physics. He then was appointed by Solihull School in the West Midlands as a member of staff. Soon after this he undertook a B.A at the Open University (Milton Keynes, UK) specialising in Biology. He was one of the very first to graduate from the University. During this time, he took a long-term interest in how to study and prepare for examinations. Five years later he studied for an M.Ed. at Leicester University, submitting his dissertation on how pupils prepared for examinations. His other interests include Singing (Church Choir), Scouting (Boy Scouts) and Keeping fit.
