This book is a Weekend Pocketbook on Everything You Should Know About Planetary Boundaries, the science of Earth's life-support systems and the limits we cross at our own risk. Written in everyday language, we explore why our planet is like a spaceship with finite oxygen, water, soil, biodiversity, and climate stability, and why keeping that system balanced is the central challenge of our time.
How much pressure can Earth absorb before its systems begin to fail? We begin with the planetary boundaries framework, introduced in 2009 by Johan Rockström and colleagues, which identifies nine major thresholds that help keep the planet stable enough for human civilization. From climate change and biodiversity loss to freshwater use, land conversion, chemical pollution, and ocean acidification, we discuss what happens when too many blocks are pulled from Earth's ecological Jenga tower.
We explore which boundaries have already been breached. Climate change has pushed carbon dioxide (CO₂) far beyond the safer range. Biodiversity loss is accelerating. Land systems are being transformed by farms, cities, roads, and deforestation. Novel entities such as plastics, microplastics, and "forever chemicals" are spreading faster than nature can absorb them. Nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers are choking rivers, lakes, and coastal seas.
We also discuss the boundaries still hovering near danger: freshwater stress, ocean acidification, and atmospheric aerosols. The ozone layer offers a rare hopeful lesson, showing how global action against chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) helped pull one planetary system back from the brink.
Can the damage still be halted or reversed?

System requirements
File format: ePUB
Copy protection: Adobe-DRM (Digital Rights Management)
System requirements:
- Computer (Windows; MacOS X; Linux): Install the free reader Adobe Digital Editions prior to download (see eBook Help).
- Tablet/smartphone (Android; iOS): Install the free app Adobe Digital Editions or the app PocketBook before downloading (see eBook Help).
- E-reader: Bookeen, Kobo, Pocketbook, Sony, Tolino and many more (not Kindle).
The file format ePub works well for novels and non-fiction books – i.e., „flowing” text without complex layout. On an e-reader or smartphone, line and page breaks automatically adjust to fit the small displays.
This eBook uses Adobe-DRM, a „hard” copy protection. If the necessary requirements are not met, unfortunately you will not be able to open the eBook. You will therefore need to prepare your reading hardware before downloading.
