Raised on a grain and livestock farm in Central Illinois, he worked as a farmer and then a bank trust officer at community banks. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois in Urbana, an MBA from the University of Illinois in Springfield and a certified financial planner designation from the College of Financial Planning.
