Indem der Autor die individuellen Informationen über Bileam, die in verschiedenen Quellen (den Wandverputzinschriften von De?ir Alla, Numeri 22-24.31; Deuteronomium 23; Josua 13; 24; Richter 11; Micha 6 und Nehemia 13) präsentiert wird, gegenüberstellt, versucht der Autor, die Entwicklung der Charakterisierungen Bileams von den ältesten überlieferten Materialien zu den jüngsten in der hebräischen Bibel nachzuvollziehen. Dadurch treibt Jonathan Miles Robker den Diskurs über die literarische und traditionshistorische Entwicklung der Texte, aus denen die hebräische Bibel entstand, voran. Über den Text der hebräischen Bibel hinaus verfolgt er auch die kontinuierliche Entwicklung von Bileams Charakterisierung durch die Texte von Qumran und das Neue Testament. Dazu steuert der Autor Diskussionen aus der Religionsgeschichte der Antike bei.
