Dr Stuart A Montgomery is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the Imperial College of Medicine in the University of London. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate training in medicine at University College, University of London, UK. He carried out further postgraduate research at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, where he was awarded his research md. Dr Montgomery is one of the foremost researchers in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. He has a great breadth of experience in the field of psychotropic medicine with seminal work in depression, anxiety disorders, suicide prevention and schizophrenia. His reputation was established with his early work on improving the methodology of clinical trials. His numerous placebo-controlled studies in the long-term treatment of depression and anxiety have set the standard for investigations in the field. The Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale is now recognised as the most sensitive instrument for measuring efficacy. He has published more than 400 research reports and reviews and has authored 26 books.
