When You Shred Your Life's Work
"The Spirit, not content to flit around on the surface, dives into the depths of God, and brings out what God planned all along." -The Message, (taken from 1 Corinthians 2:10-13)
....I stood with the ebony-black, leather-bound folder where I'd kept [my writing].
I pulled a neatly pressed poem from an inside pocket. Pica font from an electronic typewriter dotted the weathered paper as I hovered the page near the shredder.
For the last time, I silently read one of my favorite poems filled with dark, Poe-like metaphors. It hid the truth of my life like a riddle. And soon, it would be gone forever.
I fed the first page between metal teeth as the motor vibrated to life. My hand had not shaken as I had imagined. A loud noise growled as the gears slowed halfway through the page like a monstrous Venus flytrap chewing a tasty morsel. Again and again, the 10-inch font descended closer to the mouth, each line of a poem or story ripped apart and consumed.
Writing was something other people did but not me. Fairy tales never came true.
And so I continued, shredder humming, as each piece vibrated past the narrow teeth. The last document entered the metal mouth, and I made a promise to myself. I promised to never write again unless I could do it with honesty and honor. I gave every line, every page, every poem, and every story I had compiled back to God in a pile of tattered strips.
At thirty, I destroyed my life's work of poetry and short stories.
I didn't know if I'd ever write again.
