Inric's hopes for a simple book-hunt on the world of Ivorys don't last long. On his arrival he finds himself implicated in a violent attack upon a young trader, and subsequently discovers that his missing book has been claimed by a local magic-user, despite the records insisting that the locals don't use magic. Aided by the enthusiastic Kelyn, a young finesmith who has her own books to pursue, Inric must discover the truth about the origins of Ivorys' new magic while negotiating the iron control imposed upon it by the authorities.
