Humankind is evolving. Natural psionic abilities are advancing. Some live in fear of their powers and never use them. Others enjoy their talents, profiting from criminal activities. FBI Paranormal Specialist, Jack Ryley, a preternatural, is tasked to search and capture the criminal minded. One Preternatural, Shawn Edwards, was created. Allied with a highly advanced Symbiont, Shawn has been given abilities more powerful than any preternatural known to Jack's team.
Shawn's most recent crime hit too close to home. The attack occurred at the office of Dr. Thaddeus Kluge, mentor, and close friend to Jack. Local police informed Jack that there was one fatality and one casualty. The deceased, Jack, didn't know. The surviving victim, Dr. Kluge's office assistant, Alex Stanos. During her interview, Alex confided to Jack that Shawn was after a specific set of patient files. Complicating the investigation, Alex can naturally block Jack's telepathic abilities.
When Jack's plan to capture Shawn miserably fails, he is fired from the FBI. He is also cut off from his primary resources at the National Security Agency. No longer supported by the two agencies Jack strongly depended on, he decides to search for Dr. Kluge on his own.
Needing to obtain a copy of the patient files, Jack teams up with an unlikely ally, Alex. Together, the two travel through a portal to a distant land and encounter beings that shouldn't exist but do. Most importantly, they learn Shawn is after an ancient artifact. A magical book so powerful, it would make Shawn invincible.
