I have wanted to write the truth about the Indochina Wars for a long time, but I did not know where to begin. After I was supplied with much research information by Mrs Joan Woods, of Culcairn in the state of NSW, Australia, I finally had my starting point. It is for this reason that "A Gracious Enemy" begins with the Vietnamese society readjusting after the Tay Son Uprisings in 1770. That is followed by French colonisation and annexation of the three countries of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam which together make up Indochina into French colonies which were ruled by French governors and a French Governor-General.
