The work is for the most part a compilation, and it does not profess to contain much that is original. A word of explanation on this point is necessary, as, except in rare instances, it has not been thought desirable to mention other authors. A consecutive style has been adopted, which would have been broken by frequent quotations or references. The greater portion of the matter which is not given in the older text-books will be found in the Journal of the Institute 0] Actuaries, to which the initials sometimes appearing in the following pages, refer.
