The first edition of Choice Words ranks at the top of my list of professional books for educators. Happily, the second edition continues to occupy that top spot. Although we sometimes wonder if we need a second edition of a book, I assure you that we need this one! Peter Johnston understands and illuminates the power of language in teaching and learning. Teaching is a great deal about what we say and what we do. But too often we focus only on the instructional moves and ignore the importance of language to transform children's lives both in and out of the classroom. Peter's deep dive into language is staggering. He listens attentively to kids as if looking through a kaleidoscope of language with its intricate, ever-changing patterns- its nuance, its precision, and its power. Although based on solid, longstanding research, this book is not merely theoretical. It is also extremely practical and easy for educators to use. This second edition of Choice Words is filled with ideas, approaches, and actions, all carefully rooted in thoughtful consideration of how to build capable, agentive children. Peter Johnston grew up in New Zealand, taught elementary school, and came to the United States for his PhD. His fascination with, and admiration for, children's learning and, no less, teachers' teaching, led to his research, which explores relationships among classroom talk, children's engagement, and literate, social, and emotional development. Recent books include Opening Minds: Using Language to Change Lives, Engaging Literate Minds: Developing Children's Social, Emotional, and Intellectual Lives, K-3 (with teacher collaborators), and Teens Choosing to Read: Fostering Social, Emotional, and Intellectual Growth Through Books (with Gay Ivey). Peter has received numerous awards for his research and several of his books have been translated into multiple languages. He is a member of the Reading Hall of Fame.
