Volume Editor: Madelyn Iris General Editors: Tim Wallace and Alayne Unterberger Madelyn Iris, Ph.D., completed her dissertation inanthropology at Northwestern University and quickly became engagedin the newly emerging field of ethnographic evaluation. For severalyears she served as a research associate at the Erikson Institutefor Advanced Studies in Child Development, where she conductedqualitative program evaluation research. During this time shebecame interested in the problems of the frail elderly and shiftedher focus to gerontology and the study of protective services. Shejoined the Buehler Center on Aging at Northwestern University asthe assistant director for education. She was appointed Interimdirector of the center and was named the director of behavioral andsocial science research. Dr. Iris was an early participant in theNorthwestern University Ethnographic School, was appointedAssociate Director and was named director. She is an associateprofessor in the Department of Medicine, the Feinberg School ofMedicine, Northwestern University.Hermajor areas of focus nowinclude social program research and evaluation, qualitative methodsand the study of decision making and chronic illness, and NativeAmerican models of aging. She is a sustaining fellow of the Societyfor Applied Anthropology and a fellow of the Gerontological Societyof America, and was the founding chair of the NAPA Mentor Program.Dr. Iris was elected president-elect of the National Associationfor the Practice of Anthropology.
