Horace DeLisser, MD: After receiving his medical degree fromthe University of Pennsylvania in 1985, he remained at theUniversity to complete his internal medicine residency andpulmonary medicine fellowship, as well as post-doctoral researchtraining. He is currently a pulmonary and critical care specialistand an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University ofPennsylvania, School of Medicine. Scientifically, Dr. DeLisser hasa program of independently funded research that is focused on thecells that line blood vessels (endothelial cells) and theiractivity during inflammation and the formation of new vessels. Dr.DeLisser has been also been very active in medical education with aparticular interest in cultural competency. He is a course directorof the first year medical student course, "Culture andCommunication" and is the Co- investigator for the NIH, NHLBIfunded grant "Cultural Competence Health Disparities TrainingProgram". He precepts and teaches in several of the medicalschool's courses on humanism and professional. Additionally,Dr. DeLisser helped to develop the course, Spirituality inMedicine. In recognition of his contributions to medical education,he earned the Leonard Berwick Memorial Teaching Award, a First YearMedical School, Class, Outstanding Teacher Award, a Penn PearlsTeaching Award and the 2005 Robert L. Mayock - Alfred P.Fishman Teaching Award.
Lisa Hark, PhD, RD is a renowned family nutrition expertwith over 20 years of experience in nutrition counseling andpromoting the benefits of healthy eating in children and adults. AsDirector of the Nutrition Education and Prevention Program at theUniversity of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia forthe past 18 years, she is a leading nutrition educator of medicalstudents and doctors. She is currently Project Director for theCultural Competence Health Disparities Training Program", afive-year grant funded by the NIH, National Heart, Lung, and BloodInstitute. Recently, she was the host for season one of the newtelevision series "Honey, We're Killing the Kids", which airs onTLC. Dr. Hark is the editor-in-chief of numerous books includingMedical Nutrition and Disease: A Case-Based Approach (BlackwellPublishing), which is now in its 3rd edition and used in manymedical schools, physician assistant, nursing and dietetic programsin the US and around the world. In 2004, she edited CardiovascularNutrition: Disease Management and Prevention (American DieteticAssociation). In 2005 and 2006 she co-authored Nutrition For Lifeand The Whole Grain Miracle Diet (DK Publishing). Her current book,The Complete Guide to Nutrition in Primary Care, (BlackwellPublishing), will be released in 2007 and is aimed at primary careclinicians, nurses, physician assistants, and nutritionists.
