Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793) was a prominent Italian playwright, a reformer of 18th-century European theater, and one of the founders of the classic comedy of the modern era. He liberated the stage from the conventions of the old commedia dell'arte, replacing masks with living characters, improvisation with a well-thought-out plot, and formulas with observations of real life and human psychology.
This volume includes three of the writer's most famous plays: "The Servant of Two Masters," "The Cunning Widow," and "The Mistress of the Inn."
The comedy "The Servant of Two Masters" is one of the most brilliant works of the world stage, where intricate intrigue, disguises, and comic misunderstandings are transformed into a hilarious and witty spectacle.
In "The Cunning Widow," the heroine skillfully uses her feminine ingenuity to escape a difficult situation and restore justice. And in "The Mistress of the Inn" (La Locandiera), one of Goldoni's creative peaks, the playwright creates the image of a free and independent woman who conquers not by force, but by intelligence and charm.
Goldoni's comedies are a mirror of human weaknesses and simultaneously a hymn to reason, lightness, and love of life. His plays retain their freshness and brilliance to this day, remaining a staple of the European repertoire for over two centuries.
