[Sarepta's Daughters. The Life of Deaconesses between Self-Denial and Self-Assertion]
The work of deaconesses in hospitals and parishes in the 19th and the first half oft he 20th century realized important functions of care and are an essential part of church history. In 1869 in Bielefeld/Westfalia the Westfalian Deaconess Institution - called Sarepta - was founded, which had been one of the largest in Germany. There is nearly no research about the concrete life and work of deaconesses. Ute Gause shows the life of three women of Sarepta with the help of archive material - the first head Emilie Heuser (1820-1898), a district nurse, Anna Siebel (1874-1975), and the reformer Liese Hoefer (1920-2009), a PhD Psychologist, who wanted to change the institution, - thus showing a lifely picture of an institution largely supported and designed by women.
