In cold Russia of the late-nineteenth-century, the signs of a new era are coming up. A group of young revolutionaries would like to force the upheaval by all means. In the social confusion, personal interests, affairs and the love of the participants also play their part. Increasingly, the development escalates until finally cold-blooded murders are performed.

The various ideologies, such as conservatism, liberalism, nihilism and socialism, are represented in Dostoevsky¿s novel through the different protagonists.
