Nicknames:
My father, on the other hand, preferred more masculine nicknames such as Sport, Pal, and his all-time favorite, Boy. When I was very young I briefly thought my name was Damnit Boy, but was quite relieved when it was later shortened to just Boy.

So, we had what was called a "party line." Remember party lines? If you never had the pleasure, let me assure you, no part of it remotely resembled the festive celebration it was named after.
