There is no question that advances in medicine and science have brought about a significant increase of people living longer lives. A critical question becomes "How are people enjoying these additional years?" Marked differences are seen among the elderly in how they deal with aging. Some are able to endure the several hardships that aging brings and still live these years with a certain level of equanimity and enjoyment. By contrast, others find this period stressful and experience ongoing levels of anxiety. What accounts for this difference?
In Enhancing the Experience of Aging: Building a Strong Mindset, Geoff Colvin draws on his studies of relevant literature, informal interviews with a number of seniors, and his own personal experience. He concludes that one's mindset is a key factor for finding enjoyment in our aging years. He then describes practical tools, specifically the practice of mindful meditation, for developing a strong mindset in the quest to find purpose and contentment in our senior years.
