Isaac Thorton and Rebecca Miles had known each other since they were children, and both families thought they were meant for each other. However, they had different ideas of how they wanted to live. Rebecca enjoyed where she lived and hoped to find a man willing to live where she had grown up, surrounded by family and friends. Like his father, before he settled down, Isaac was restless. He wanted to explore the vast country opening up in the west, so he decided to go west with his cousin Andrew. Isaac would continue west with the Lewis and Clark expedition, whereas Andrew would travel south to Natchez. Would Isaac's trip west mean that he never saw his family again? Would Rebecca marry one of the young men who frequented the Miles homestead in Northwestern Pennsylvania?
