A master of late Romanticism, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (Spain, 1836-1870) is one of the most famous and celebrated authors across Spain and Latin America. His works (including Leyendas and Rimas) have been best sellers since their original publication in the 19th century. Often compared to Edgar Allan Poe, his natural style influenced Antonio Machado and Juan Ramón Jiménez[JP1] , among others.
Leyendas includes eighteen short stories published between 1858 and 1864, and is a classic of Spanish literature. With E.T.A. Hoffmann as an inspiration, gothic fiction, popular tradition, mystery and exoticism converge in this book's vibrant and lyrical prose, making it a great choice for readers with a good command of the language.
