Description
Arnulf Rainer is one of the most important contemporary artists. One of his main sources of inspiration was Art Brut, which he became aware of in the post-war period through Surrealism. The term Art Brut (raw art) was introduced by Jean Dubuffet in 1945 and refers to art untouched by cultural influences. A long-standing collaboration developed with the Gugging artists and the founder of the Center for Art Psychiatry, Leo Navratil.
This publication explores Rainer's engagement with Art Brut-including two reprints of his texts-, highlights collaborations with artists from Gugging such as Johann Hauser, Fritz Koller, and Rudolf Liemberger, focusing on works from the Zambo Collection, and presents several Art Brut artists.
Text: Freia Bumberger, Nikolaus Kratzer, Alexandra Latiy, Arnulf Rainer, Cäcilia Emely Steinkellner.
