Description
This book presents frameworks, algorithms, and techniques in order to make the application of virtual reality for virtual prototyping feasible. In particular, virtual assembly simulation is focused.
The contributions are in the following areas: high-level specification of virtual environments, efficient interaction metaphors and frameworks, real-time collision detection and response, physically-based simulation, tracking, and virtual prototyping application development.
For authoring virtual environments, a framework is proposed which allows the creation of content without programming. This is accomplished by an event-based approach based on the concepts of actions, events, inputs, and objects.
Collision detection is one of the enabling technologies for all kinds of physically-based simulation and virtual prototyping. Subsequently, several algorithms for all stages of the collision detection pipeline are presented and evaluated, allowing real-time detection in complex environments.
Techniques, frameworks, and algorithms are presented for many aspects of interaction in virtual environments, ranging from device handling through physically-based object behavior.
