Description
The Atlas of Marine Invertebrate Larvae is the most comprehensive guide to larval form and anatomy ever produced. Each chapter provides a referenced overview of life cycles, reproduction, embryology, larval life, larval form and metamorphosis in a particular group of invertebrates. More than 1200 drawings and photographs illustrate the gross anatomy of all known types of marine larvae and provide a visual survey of the range of larval diversity within each phylum.
This book assembles the best larval photographs previously published in scientific literature into one place. Many of the plates, which include color photographs and numerous scanning electron micrographs, are original. Contributed chapters and illustrative material is covered by more than 50 recognized authorities on larval development from throughout the world.

Reviews / Votes
"...this atlas is without a doubt the most comprehensive compilation of marine larval forms and their organization groups, but often also from their different stages during development as well as from metamorphosis stages...highly recommended with resepect to the representation of the diversity and variability of marine larvae...Anyone who works with or is interested in marine invertebrates will find in the atlas a most valuable representation of their larvae, most of which are highly unlike the familiar adult form in appearance. Marine biology students will be well served by this book: undergraduates are introduced to the world of highly diverse, fully independent small organisms populating different pelagic zones; upper- and postgraduates will find a qualified guide to the diverse organizational types and for the determination of the developmental stages that give rise to the well-known mature animals."-Dr. L. v. Salvini-Plawen, Universitat Wien, Vienna, Austria, in MARINE ECOLOGY

Craig Young is Professor of Biology at the University of Oregon, and past Director of the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology. Dr. Young has devoted his professional career to investigating the reproduction and early life-history stages of marine benthic invertebrates at all depths of the sea, and his lab pioneered the culture of larvae from deep-sea environments worldwide. Dr. Young, the founding editor of Atlas of Marine Invertebrate Larvae, returns to the second edition as co-editor.
Mary A. Sewell is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She is an authority on the larval form, physiology, and ecology of echinoderms, with research on species from the tropics to the Antarctic and from the intertidal to abyssal depths. Dr. Sewell returns to the second edition of Atlas of Marine Invertebrate Larvae as associate editor.
