The Intellectual Life of the Architect

Samir Younes is Professor of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, where he was Director of Graduate Studies and Director of Rome Studies. He is author of 'The True, the Fictive and the Real, Quatremere de Quincy's Historical Dictionary of Architecture', Papadakis, 1997, and his most recent book is 'The Imperfect City: On Architectural Judgment', Ashgate, 2012. He has edited a number of books, including 'Ara Pacis Controprogetti / Counterprojects', Alinea, 2002; 'Architects and Mimetic Rivalry', Papadakis, 2012, and 'The Empire of Non-sense', Papadakis, 2014. Younes' projects and essays on architecture and aesthetics have appeared in 'Architectural Design', 'The Journal of the Royal Institute of Philosophy', 'The Journal of Urban Design', 'Archi e Colonne International', 'Quadri e Sculture' and 'American Arts Quarterly'. In 1993, Younes designed the monument for the Cornerstone laying ceremony for the Bicentennial of the U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C. One of his most recent architectural projects for the island of Pantelleria was exhibited at the Biennale di Venezia, Autumn, 2006.
