Description
Nations, Identities and the First World War examines the changing perceptions and attitudes about the nation and the fatherland by different social, ethnic, political and religious groups during the conflict and its aftermath. The book combines chapters on broad topics like propaganda state formation, town and nation, and minorities at war, with more specific case studies in order to deepen our understanding of how processes of national identification supported the cultures of total war in Europe. This transnational volume also reveals and develops a range of insightful connections between the themes it covers, as well as between different groups within Europe and different countries and regions, including Western and Eastern Europe, the Ottoman Empire and colonial territories. It is a vital study for all students and scholars of the First World War.
Reviews / Votes
This well-researched and sweeping volume fittingly commemorates the centenary of the armistice and celebrates decades of productive academic work that has enriched our understanding of how modern national identities were formed ... Wouters and Ypersele's book is a superb work that demonstrates how comparative and transnational methodologies can furnish rich insights into the character of early twentieth-century nationalism, the complex nature of wartime loyalty, and the powerful forces that drive people to redefine their identities. * H-CivWar * This book adds in important ways to our knowledge of the multiple facets of loyalties to nation, empire, people, and place, and about the effect of the 1914-18 conflict on inclusions and exclusions in wartime and in its aftermath. * Jay Winter, Charles J. Stille Professor of History Emeritus, Yale University, USA *More details
